Please don't use this word 'darr': Deepika Padukone stops a reporter from terming acid attack survivors as ‘scary’ at 'Chhapaak' trailer launch

Deepika Padukone, along with her director Meghna Gulzar and co-star Vikrant Massey, launched the trailer of her upcoming film Chhapaak today. Producers Govind Sandhu and Vijay Singh were also present at the event. The film based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal. Deepika plays Laxmi Agarwal who is named Malti in the film while Vikrant essays the role of her boyfriend. Today, at the trailer launch event, Deepika was asked about her reaction when she first saw herself with prosthetics. DP admitted she felt "just like herself".

The reporter who asked the actress the question asked if she felt scared (darr laga aapko?) after looking at her. To this, Deepika very strongly opposed and said, "Okay, first of all, the word which you used right now 'Darr Lagna' is very wrong. We should not use that vocabulary at all. It is so ironic that I myself didn't even know how I will feel when I will look at myself for the first time in the mirror after the prosthetics. But I remember again this moment very very clearly, we were at the fox office and we were doing the look test. And it took almost 4-5 hours the first time we did it. And I fell asleep and woke up and the first time, I looked at myself in the mirror, I looked at Meghna and said, I feel like myself. Nothing has changed. And that's the day, I found my character. That's the day I knew what I had to do for the movie. I don't think we should be or are defined by our external appearance only."

Deepika's answer made everyone applaud for her. Meghna also shared her thoughts and stated, “To add to that, if there’s anything the journey of Chhapaak taught us, it is that these girls who are acid attack survivors, they do not consider themselves victims. They don’t want our sympathy. They are not hesitant to walk in our society, it is us who are hesitant to meet their gaze. That is what we need to change.”
