PeepingMoon Exclusive! Amazon renews Excel Entertainment’s ‘Mirzapur’ for third season too, hunt on for new characters

Amazon Prime Video’s crime thriller web series Mirzapur, which is returning with its second season this April, will have a third season after that. PeepingMoon.com has learned that Amazon Prime Video has renewed the Excel Entertainment show for a third season even before its sophomore installment is out for viewing.

“Amazon is happy with the way Mirzapur’s second season has shaped up and is confident of its success. Amazon heads asked Excel to start writing the third season soon after wrapping up the shoot for its second run last year. The makers are said to be currently giving the finishing touches to the script and are planning to kick off shooting around May. They are simultaneously also auditioning for new characters that are expected to join the drama in the third season,” an industry source informed PeepingMoon.com.

Mirzapur revolves around the rule of mafia dons in Purvanchal, UP, where drugs, guns and lawlessness prevail, and where the government is corrupt and the rivalry between gangs is gritty and bloody. It is Amazon Prime Video’s third fiction Indian Original after Inside Edge and Breathe. The first season had nine episodes and premiered in November 2018. Its follow-up season is believed to be equally gripping and promises more edge-of-the-seat drama backed by power-packed performances from Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyendu Sharma, Shweta Tripathi and Harshita Gaur who return to tell their revenge story with all the gunshots.

Mirzapur is the second Amazon Prime Video Indian series that has been renewed for third season after the Vivek Oberoi-fronted Inside Edge which, coincidentally, is also an Excel Entertainment production. The Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani-led banner is also developing another multi-season, big-budget crime show based on the bestseller, Dongri To Dubai: Six Decades of the Mumbai Mafia. The Kay Kay Menon and Avinash Tiwary starrer and Shujaat Saudagar directed real-life drama is currently being filmed for a 2021 release.
