Star Plus to revive its long-delayed show Vidrohi; Jitin Gulati replaces Anjum Sharma as male lead

Mythological and historical shows are doing wonders on television. Almost every leading GEC is airing one or two such shows and that too on primetime. Star Plus, which has earlier had successful historical and mythological series on the network including Dharti Ka Veer Yodha Prithviraj ChauhanMahabharat and Siya Ke Ram, has not tasted much success with its recent offerings in the genre.

In recent time, the channel has launched mega-budgeted shows like Aarambh and Karn Sangini, but both of them failed to grab audiences’ attention despite being promoted heavily. While Goldie Behl’s Aarambh was axed within a gap of four months, Shashi Sumeet Productions ‘Karn Sangini is also set to bid adieu on 25th February.

With no new historical or mythological show on its catalogue, Star Plus has now decided to revive its long-delayed historical series Vidrohi, which is based on an armed rebellion against the British East India Company's rule in Odisha in 1817.

The channel first started working on the series at the beginning of 2018, but then it was put on the backburner for reasons best known to the network. However, in order to strengthen its programming and offer something fresh to the audience, the channel has commenced work on the show once again and that too in full swing.

When Vidrohi was planned initially, Anjum Sharma was roped in to play the male lead in it. But now the channel has cast Jitin Gulati for the lead role. Jitin is best known for his show Prithvi Vallabh, Amazon Prime Video’s Inside Edge (2017) and the LGBTQ themed award-winning short film Sisak (2017).

A reliable source informed us, “Anjum Sharma was set to play the lead role when the show was conceptualized in 2018. He had even shot for the pilot. However, when the makers began working on the show again earlier this year, they did not find the old cast appealing enough and, resultantly, Jitin Gulati was brought onboard to replace Anjum. The rest of the cast is being finalized.”

The team is looking at starting the regular shoot in the first week of March. Vidrohi is being produced by Gatha Productions.
