Box Office: Word of mouth helps Taapsee's 'Thappad' with a decent first weekend; Ayushmann's 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan' continues to impress

Taapsee Pannu-starrer Thappad, directed by Anubhav Sinha, saw a low-key opening of Rs 3.07 crore on Friday, its first day of release, in the domestic market despite excellent reviews and positive word of mouth. On Saturday, the film managed to earn Rs 5.05 crore and on Sunday, the film wrapped up at Rs 6.54 crore, thereby taking the first weekend collections to Rs 14.66 crore. 

Ever since the trailer of the film was released, it received a thunderous response. In a unique never before seen situation, the makers started organizing screenings of the movie ten days before the official release. These screenings were organized by directors from the industry. Thappad marks the hattrick of hits given by Anubhav Sinha after Mulk and Article 15. The viewers have loved how such a critical topic has gotten light and has been talked about in such a tenacious way. It hit the screens on February 28.

On the other hand, Last week's Bollywood release, Ayushmann Khurrana's Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, a gay rom-com, managed a first-week haul of Rs 44.84 crore. On Friday and Saturday, the film raked in decent numbers and on its second Sunday, it managed to collect Rs 4.06 crore. 

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, "#ShubhMangalZyadaSaavdhan posts healthy numbers on [second] Sat and Sun... #Delhi, #NCR continue to contribute... Lack of major opposition [new release] helped, to an extent... [Week 2] Fri 2.08 cr, Sat 3.25 cr, Sun 4.06 cr. Total: 54.23 cr. #India biz. #SMZS"

The film has crossed Rs 50 crore mark.
