A massive Level 2 blaze broke out at Bollywood's iconic R K Studios on V. N. Puran Marg in Chembur this afternoon. The fire which was first reported at 2.20 pm spread rapidly. Six fire tenders and three water tankers were rushed to the spot and as traffic was brought to a standstill, firemen struggled to prevent the flames from spreading to the rest of the old studio. No casualties were reported.
Unconfirmed sources said the cause of the blaze was a short circuit. Electric wiring and installations and decorations went up in flames first. No member of the Kapoor family which has owned and has been running the studio since 1948 was on the premises when the fire broke out. But Rishi Kapoor was said to be rushing there even as news of the blaze began trending. The family's big fear is that the fire might spread to R K Studio's warehouse which is like a museum of old costumes and memorabilia from Raj Kapoor's old black-and-white films.
No films were being made at the time at the studios. However, the sets of Shilpa Shetty's television reality show Super Dancer 2 are erected here. And unfortunately, the entire set is gutted and burnt to ashes.
Just last week, the landmark studio in Chembur was in the news when Bollywood superstar Ranbir Kapoor led the procession bearing its famous Ganpati for immersion with much fanfare. He was accompanied by his father Rishi and uncles Randhi and Rajiv Kapoor.
R K Studios has had a fire on its premises before. In February 2015, when Shah Rukh Khan was shooting an episode of his television show India Poochega Sabse Shaana Kaun, a generator caught fire and caused a blackout. The show was stopped immediately and all celebrities on the sets, including Karan Johar, Farah Khan, Anushka Sharma and Alia Bhatt were safely evacuated.
