Indian Idol 12: Karan Johar says Salman Khan told him only a 'paagal' can do Aman's role in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, reveals why superstar signed the film blindly

Karan Johar graced the semi-finale episode of the popular singing reality show Indian Idol 12. The top 6 contestants impressed the filmmaker with their performances and took him down memory lane. During the episode, Karan opened up about how Salman Khan agreed to do the second lead in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The film starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol was Karan's directorial debut.

During the episode of Indian Idol 12, Karan revealed that nobody said yes to the role of the second lead. The filmmaker said he was very disappointed. However, it was Chunky Panday's house party that changed everything for him. "With Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as the lead actors, no one said yes to the role of the second lead. I went to three or four actors, I won’t name them, but they all said no. I was very disappointed and with my sad face, I went to attend a party at Chunky Panday's house," Karan told.

Karan added that at Chunky's party, he met Salman who instantly agreed to do the role. The filmmaker shared, “Toh woh meri taraf aaye aur unhone kaha apni style mein, ‘Tune kar li shopping?’ I said, ‘Shopping?’ He said, ‘Haan, tu gaya na sab ke paas. Woh shopping hi toh hoti hai. Lekin iss film ko karne ke liye kisi ko paagal hona chahiye aur main woh paagal hoon’."

Karan shared that he had never thought of approaching a big star like Salman for the second lead. Recalling the day he narrated the story of Salman, Karan said, "He heard the first half and said I would do the film. I got worried as I wondered if he thought I was offering him Shah Rukh’s role. I told him, ‘sir aapka role aaya nahi abhi tak’. Salman said the role is immaterial as he knows my father and is doing the film for him."

Salman played the role of Aman in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He was the fiancé of Kajol’s character Anjali. The superstar went on to win Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actor that year.
