Though fashion has made a dramatic comeback with in-person events, technology still seems to be a driving force on the fashion front. With concepts like metaverse and NFTs slowly gaining momentum, fashion is expanding its reach in the digital space.
On Monday, Jonathan Simkhai took New York Fashion Week into the digital space by showcasing his AW22 wearables collection as part of Metaverse Fashion Week. Produced by Everyrealm and Blueberry Entertainment, this digital collection was presented a day before his physical presentation and featured the designer’s eleven new pieces in the metaverse space.
Transforming wearables into digital clothing, the designer label has made history as ‘the first ever to show its autumn/winter 2022 digital wearables collection ahead of their physical counterparts,” reported Glamour. The metaverse real estate investor and developer, Everyrealm is also hosting an NFT sale of select wearables from the collection.
However, it wasn’t just the collection pieces that were digital. The virtual show had a human feel featuring models, celebrities and fashion biggies, sitting in the front row wearing Simkhai’s pieces. They appeared in their personalized avatars and arrived at the show via teleportation to their allotted seats.
"I really wanted to break the ice and figure this new world out and try to expose my customer to it, but also acquire a new customer,” Simkhai explained. “It’s not like I was doing one instead of the other; it was business as usual with an extra fun layer. There were a lot of people talking about the metaverse, but we actually did something,” said Jonathan, as reported by Rollacoaster Magazine.
The future is indeed here!
