Update: Actor likely to be questioned

UPDATE: If the police sources are to be believed, the brother-in-law was in touch with the said actor and the officials suspect that he might have shared tips about the forthcoming matches

The Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police have just busted a betting racket and arrested the brother-in-law of a Bollywood actor whose last release was based on the Mumbai underworld and in which he played a gangster-turned-politician.

The arrested man is a big time punter by the name of A. Gill.

With cricket season picking up steam and India thrashing the much-fancied visiting Australian XI in the ODI series, betting syndicates have got back into action much to the concern of the police. A senior officer of the Detection of Crime Branch confirmed that acting on the orders of Mumbai Police Commissioner Datta Padsalgikar, a massive raid was carried out on all illegal betting syndicates in the city in which several notorious bookies and major punters were arrested. Most of the arrests were made in Thane and Bhandup. However, Gill was arrested from Bandra in a bust that netted the police six bookies.

Bollywood is no stranger to betting on cricket matches and, indeed, on fixing matches too. The arrests and interrogation of big bookies have in the past revealed the names of Bollywood celebs that place bets with them regularly. These bets run into crores of rupees and the betting is always done in five star hotels located in the western suburbs. Bollywood personalities apart, industrialists and diamond merchants are also known to place bets on cricket matches.

Now with the arrest of Gill, the police are wondering whether the rot has spread deep in Bollywood all over again. The police are also concerned whether the involved parties have an interest in the drug trade because the Bollywood actor whose kin was arrested was known to be under the scanner for his drug habits in the past. It is likely the actor may also be called in for questioning by the police at a future date if Gill’s role is found to be that of the kingpin in the racket.
