India’s Test Vice-Captain Ajinkya Rahane’s father was arrested today for causing the death of a woman in a car accident on National Highway No. 4 near Kolhapur. According to police sources, Madhukar Baburao Rahane’s car hit a 67-year-old woman by the name of Ashatai Kamble near the Kagal Bus Station in Kolhapur injuring her grievously. Witnesses to the accident rushed Ashatai to a nearby government hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

The police seized the car, a Hyundai i20, and took Rahane Sr. into custody. He was accompanied by his wife and daughter at the time of the accident. The family was reportedly traveling to Tarkali in the Konkan Region via the Pune-Bengaluru Highway for a vacation when the accident occurred. A case has been filed under Sections 304A, 337, 338 and 279 of the IPC along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act. This being a high-profile case, the police are tight-lipped about details and reluctant to make a statement.
