With his grand family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Karan Johar converted a hitherto-clueless world to the concept of dressing up in one’s traditional best, fasting the entire day for the well-being of your husband, and then finally viewing the moon through a sieve as you matched steps to ‘Bole chudiyan, bole kangana…’ (Ironically, this song had also featured Hrithik Roshan, who will never permit himself to take that particular name again!)
Anyway, to get back to Karva Chauth, it was celebrated yesterday just like they do in the KJo movies, at the home of Sunita and Anil Kapoor. Images of the gorgeously dressed B-town beauties, as they waited to spot the moon, have been shared by said beauties themselves, and we have been feasting our eyes on the likes of Shilpa Shetty seated next to Raveena Tandon (both of whom loved and lost Akshay Kumar, remember?), Lalli Dhawan, Sunita Kapoor, sisters in law Sridevi and Maheep Kapoor, Neelam Kothari, Bhavana Pandey, ‘fasting and thirsting together’ – and looking fab doing it!

Of course, not the whole of B-town was in fasting mode; some simply refuse to celebrate this allegedly regressive tradition. Kareena Kapoor Khan has come out in the past to say that she doesn’t believe in giving up food for her husband, adding, “I don't need to starve to prove my love. I am not going to fast. I am a Kapoor. I can't live without food. I would celebrate it by eating, working…”
This year we know that Ayushmann Khurrana also fasted, what with the actor sharing a post on Instagram captioned: “त से ताहिरा. Celebrating #Karvachauth with her. Why should only women fast. Let's celebrate equality and change this patriarchal tradition. If you can't dissuade her from fasting then join her.” That’s sweet, Ayushmann, but not really new – Amitabh Bachchan has been joining wife Jaya in fasting on this day for decades now. Just like his Pa, Abhishek Bachchan too has been doing likewise, fasting together with Aishwarya.

Twinkle Khanna, who has made no secret of her stand regarding Karva Chauth, took to Twitter yet again to quip, “Scientists studying longest living mammals, bowhead whales found for a long life what is needed is a slow metabolism & not wives who fast:)”
Mrs. Funnybones is funny alright. However, on this occasion, our B-town beauties, who traditionally end up with gorgeous jewellery gifts from their grateful husbands at the end of the evening, probably do have the last laugh!
