“It’s not about sex, it’s about power”: Priyanka on the Weinstein scandal

Power was, but naturally, the topic du jour at the Variety Power of Women event that took place at the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons. And Priyanka Chopra was there, gracing the 2017 Marie Claire Power Trip, and speaking her heart out on the subject.

At the event, the actress addressed the issue that has sent shockwaves through Hollywood – the Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment and assault allegations. Increasing numbers of women have come out to speak up against the movie mogul, sharing their experiences of abuse, resulting in Weinstein’s fallout from his prestigious role in cinema. “It’s not just about sexuality,” said Priyanka, explaining the workings of this harassment by Weinstein. “It’s not about sex. It’s about power.” She went on to explain that “It’s an isolating feeling. The easiest thing to take away from a woman is her work.’’

Speaking with touching honesty, Priyanka revealed that the fear of failure keeps her up at night. In her opinion, the solution for women, not just for Hollywood’s leading ladies, but for all women in the workplace, is power in numbers.
Power is, has always been, the vortex around which everything rotates. In a recent interview Priyanka had spoken candidly about what makes her powerful. “I don't always feel powerful,” she admitted. “I think that sometimes women have to show an enormous amount of strength to be perceived as unbreakable and that we can walk toe-to-toe with any man and anyone around the world. But women are physiologically different. It's hard. I am vulnerable sometimes, I'm moody sometimes and it is hard for me. There is no way I let anyone see that when I walk onto a set and I think that's what makes me powerful.” What makes her powerful, she claimed, was being able to emotionally check herself, and use her vulnerabilities as her strength. “I think that is the power of femininity,” she concluded, in an answer that would have won her the crown in an international beauty pageant!
Jokes apart, we do think she makes her point and makes it very well too.
