Twenty-two years after Aamir Khan’s romantic-comedy-drama Rangeelaredefined what a mainstream blockbuster was by entertaining audiences, winning critical acclaim, and sweeping the popular Bollywood awards in 1995, there is hope of a sequel being made.
Earlier reports of this happening were rubbished by Ram Gopal Varma who wrote the story, screenplay, co-produced and directed Rangeela. But Peeping Moon.com sources now say that a Hyderabad-based production company possibly related to RGV is keen on a sequel to the super hit film and has approached Aamir.
Bollywood history shows that Aamir has never been excited about making sequels to any of his popular films. There was talk earlier of a sequel being made to the 1994 comedy Andaz Apna Apna in which Aamir co-starred with Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor, but that project never took off reportedly due to Aamir’s reluctance. It is not known whether Salman, Raveena and Karisma were enthusiastic about the sequel, but the rumour died down quickly.
Now the Rangeela sequel idea is said to be lying with Aamir and if sources are to be believed, the actor who has another blockbuster in his Diwali release Secret Superstar tomorrow, is mildly interested in it. However, Aamir has not agreed to do it yet. He’s busy with the big budget Thugs of Hindostan, his period action adventure with Amitabh Bachchan, that’s posted for a Diwali 2018 release. After that, Aamir has no films on hand.
Trade sources are excited at the thought of watching Aamir reprise his role of the street savvy black-marketer “Munna” from Rangeela who won audiences’ hearts. But what about the rest of the cast? Urmila Matondkar, who got married last year, rose to great heights after Rangeela, but her career was short-lived and the actress has not been seen in Bollywood recently but for appearances at filmi parties. Her last Hindi film was Himmesh Reshammiya’s Karzzz in 2008.
Jackie Shroff, who was also given a powerful supporting role in Rangeela by RGV, is now into a second innings in Bollywood and is working on Sujeeth’s bilingual action-thriller Saaho that stars Prabhas and Shraddha Kapoor. Jackie Dada apparently plays the villain in Saaho.
Rangeela was also notable for A. R. Rahman’s music. This was his first original Hindi soundtrack as earlier the Maestro of Madras, as Rahman is known, worked exclusively in South Indian films. If the sequel to Rangeela is on the cards, then Rahman will definitely be on board. But if Aamir declines the film, as he is more than likely to, then sources say the production company will probably take the idea to new faces. We believe Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra would be as rangeela a pairing as the original Aamir-Urmila was.
