Who silenced KRK?

For a Diwali gift, Bollywood could not have wished for anything as cheery as that acerbic self-proclaimed film critic Kamaal Rashid Khan (KRK) being silenced by Twitter. It happened yesterday. After KRK, in his traditional punchy style, attacked Aamir Khan and the actor’s new film Secret Superstar in his review on Twitter. Soon after, reportedly without any warning, Twitter responded by suspending KRK’s @kamaalrkhan account.

Indefatigable, KRK told Bollywood that if Twitter had shut him down he would take legal action against it, while ominously promising that his film reviews would continue to come on YouTube, BeFlix TV and his website. Meanwhile, the buzz that went around was that it was on Aamir’s complaint that Twitter had finally taken action against its habitual offender.

What happened was that KRK, on finding Secret Superstar unimpressive, had viciously slandered the film on Twitter and taken ugly personal potshots at Aamir. Last year around Diwali, KRK got Bollywood’s hackles up when he commented on the Karan Johar-Ajay Devgn clash at the box office with their respective films Ae Dil Ha Mushkil and Shivaay coming together.

Though KRK himself seems to believe Aamir is responsible for getting Twitter to suspend his account this time, Peeping Moon.com sources say otherwise. It is true that the fortunes of his film mean a lot to Aamir. But it is unlikely the actor would go to the extent of approaching Twitter to suspend KRK for his scathing remarks against Secret Superstar and him.

There have been several other Bollywood superstars who KRK has bashed without provocation in the past and any one or all of them might be responsible for this action. Supporting this theory is Supreme Court advocate Rizwan Siddiquee who took KRK head-on last year in a legal showdown that appears to have had its consequences finally.

Talking to Peeping Moon.com, Siddiquee said, “I had made various complaints against KRK which included and were not limited to filing of two FIRs against him for outraging the modesty of various film heroines. I even got the National Women Commission (NWC) and the Maharashtra State Women Commission (MSWC) involved. I sincerely believe that my complaint could have led to suspension of his Twitter account as he was using it to commit criminal acts.”

Siddiquee had filed a third party complaint in the Versova Police Station against KRK in 2016 for allegedly harassing and outraging the modesty of Bollywood actresses Sunny Leone, Kangana Ranaut, Parineeti Chopra, Katrina Kaif and many others. He reportedly also asked Twitter to deactivate KRK’s account.

The MSWC asked Mumbai Police Commissioner Dattatray Padsalgikar to investigate Siddiquee’s complaint and take necessary action after the advocate approached the NCW against KKR as well. Despite which, KRK had a free run on Twitter and continued taking down stars and ripping their films unchallenged. Until yesterday, that is, when he took on Aamir and his Secret Superstar.

Now KRK’s followers get the following message when they look for him on Twitter, “The account has been suspended. Learn more about why Twitter suspends accounts, or return to your timeline.” People are wondering who belled this cat. Was it really Aamir as KRK suspects? Advocate Rizwan Siddiquee? Or did Twitter itself decide that enough was enough, in his case? And if Twitter set an example, would YouTube and BeFlix TV follow?
