It is part of Salman Khan’s ‘Being Humane’ philosophy. On the fairly rare occasion that a film of Bhaijaan’s does not click at the box office, he compensates the distributors out of his own pocket to mitigate their losses. He did it this year again, when his Kabir Khan-starrer, Tubelight, failed to achieve the mammoth success of their Bajrangi Bhaijaan and was declared flop at the box office. The film ended its lifetime run at Rs.121.25 crore, leading to the distributors incurring huge losses. However, Salman, as is his norm, stepped in to lessen the damage. He manfully forked out Rs.32.50 crore to nullify part of their losses – and won their hearts and his credibility, all over again.

Now Shah Rukh does likewise. His Jab Harry Met Sejal was expected to collect Rs.100 crore at least, and NH Studioz had acquired all India rights of the film for Rs.80 crore. However, the film’s collections did not even come close to the mark. Now, a recent report claims that the star has in fact compensated about 30% of losses to some distributors, even though he was legally not bound to do so. It is said that he refunded about 15% to NH Studioz and 30% to the other distributors. The star’s team apparently analyzed the losses suffered by each distributor and suggested the amount of corrective action.
Incidentally, this isn’t the first time that Shah Rukh has compensated the distributors for their loss. He had reportedly refunded the distributors for the 2015 release Dilwale, his 2005 release Paheli and his 2001 release Asoka, as well. In fact, post Dilwale, he had refunded a whopping 50% of the loss suffered by distributors, leading to him being hailed as a most considerate producer. While not actually confirming the payback at the time, SRK had admitted, “I don't think the film has done as well as it should have. I am personally disappointed with that.”
