Blue skies and cheery smiles: Ranbir Kapoor’s Cape Town schedule was a hit

And it’s a wrap! The Cape Town schedule of the Sanjay Dutt biopic, helmed by Rajkumar Hirani, has been completed. And by the looks of it, it was a very successful one. A picture of the crew, including Ranbir and Hirani posing together with the blue sky and verdant trees of South Africa in the background, shows the entire team in a happy frame of mind. Donning a grey tee, black sunglasses and a black beanie, Ranbir looks relaxed and happy, as does Hirani.

This puts paid to the rumours that had been circulating not long ago about supposed trouble between the director and his lead star. Reports had suggested that Ranbir felt that since the film was a biopic, he should be the centre of attention. However, given Hirani’s mindset when it comes to movie-making, he prefers a blend of entertainment with a powerful message. Ranbir was evidently unable to understand why the film needed to delve into the lives of others in the story.

However, if there was discord, it has been amicably dissolved. Rajkumar Hirani has been unstinting in his praise of Ranbir, saying, “The only thing I can say is Ranbir, who is depicting Sanjay Dutt from the age of 20 to 55, has a lot of different get-ups. He has to wake up at 3 am and then has to sit patiently for 5 hours for his make-up and then work rigorously for 12 hours.”

He had added, “I have never seen Ranbir coming late to the set on a single day or complaining about anything or giving excuses to leave from work. I am having absolute joy and I am really enjoying making this film. It is a pure joy to make films, if we have actors like Ranbir Kapoor.”

On his part, Ranbir had also spoken about the thrill of playing ‘Sanju sir’… “He’s like an overgrown child, who gives love to people…I feel like I was born to play this part. He is the only actor whose picture is on my cupboard and to play him is surreal. Getting a physical look right is easy. To get somebody’s soul right, the human being right - that’s the hard part. I hope I’ve done a good job.”

He also added, “I’m grateful for this film and am working hard on it. I hope that people understand this man’s life, his soul through my work.”
