Sridevi: From Russia with Love!

Sridevi is the new Russian sensation! In the country for the premiere of her revenge saga, Mom, also starring Akshaye Khanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the response has supposedly been tremendous. The Ravi Udyawar directorial premiered at a theater packed with an audience of 400, including Russian delegates and cinema aficionados.

Sri was accompanied by husband Boney Kapoor and her daughter Khushi. Her elder daughter Janhvi is shooting for her debut, Dhadak, along with Ishaan Khattar and could not be present. They were welcomed by the Indian ambassador in Moscow, Pankaj Saran at the premiere of the film.

The veteran actress’s rape revenge drama will release in 30 theatres across the country, under the title Mama. Moved by the response to the film at the premiere, Sridevi said in a statement, “It was overwhelming to witness the audiences’ reaction to the film. It felt like I was watching it for the first time because there was so much energy in the room!”

Husband and producer Boney, was equally overwhelmed, remembering the time his classic Mr India had also released in Russia 30 years ago. He pointed out, “The locals are celebrating our cinema. While the influx of Hindi films had slowed down in the last few years, we seem to be back with a bang. This is the time for an Indo-Russian collaboration.”
Mom, a revenge saga, saw Sridevi plays the protagonist, a woman who shares a troubled relationship with her daughter. However, when faced with a catastrophe, she finds the courage to avenge her daughter and also win her love. The film was released in India on July 7 and collected Rs.64 crore at the box office. Sridevi’s choice of picking a bold and unconventional subject had come in for praise.

Last month it had been reported that the Sridevi-starrer would have the biggest release for a Hindi film in Russia. The film had also been screened to qualify for the 75th Golden Globe Awards in the foreign film category.
