Who would have thought that stitching would apparently be the absolute in thing right now?! We were just getting used to the sight of Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma wielding needle and thread for their Sui Dhaaga when another star is set to wield the tailoring scissors! Sonakshi Sinha is all gung-ho about playing Gujarati fashion designer Jinal Patel in her upcoming Welcome to New York – and we predict she will do a great job of it.

Sonakshi, for those who remember, has actually been a fashion student, studying designing at SNDT before she made her acting debut opposite Salman Khan in Dabangg in 2010. Naturally, she is already quite the expert when it comes to the ins and outs of playing designer for the camera. The actress said in a recent interview, “I have had three years of real-life experience in fashion designing but this will be the first reel experience. It was quite easy to bring certain elements from my student days to this character. Back then, I learnt how to sew, cut, embroider, illustrate and dye fabrics. It never felt tedious and I ended up winning ‘Student of the Year’ title in my batch!”
The actress also revealed that she could relate to the character she plays in Welcome to New York because Jinal Patel was everything she aspired to be as a student. In fact, she had a blast portraying this character, adding “Scenes in which I’m sketching, cutting cloth, taking measurements took me back to college days.”
For those wondering about her character’s distinctive look, it was created by Sonakshi’s college batchmate, Eka Lakhani. Sonakshi is seen pulling off Jinal’s quirky look which matches Kurtis with bindis and heavy but trendy accessories. “I think Eka understood the quirks of the character really well and applied it to Jinal’s different and individual style,” Sona explained.
The film will see Sonakshi play a neurotic young woman facing a double blow – losing her job and her boyfriend! Diljit Dosanjh will play a farmer’s son with dreams of his own, namely, to act and travel the world. This unexpected duo run into each other on a trip to New York City, as they embark on a life-changing escapade.
We are liking the cut and shape of this one, already!
