He is India’s go-getting cricket captain; she’s a hotshot actress and producer. But they apparently have a quaint and lovely weakness – for poetry! Romantic poetry is not something one would associate with these high-flying achievers, but we are happy to report that both Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli have a huge soft spot for verses.
More proof of this came recently when Anushka’s parents, Col (Retd) Ajay Kumar Sharma and Ashima attended the unveiling of a book of poems by Tejaswini Divya Naik. Anushka’s father is close friends with the writer Tejaswini’s father, Col (Retd.) Anurag Naik, a former army doctor. The book is “a collection of 42 poems on relationships, the ups and downs that come along with it, falling apart like rubble, but then finding oneself, gathering that strength back and building yourself up, back from that same rubble.”

The Sharma's made sure to pick up a copy for their daughter and son-in-law. What’s more, they made sure to have the poet especially autograph the book for Anushka and Virat.
Last year, when Anushka and Virat had tied the knot in a private ceremony in Italy in December, they had a special return gift go out to their family and close friends. It was an anthology of Rumi’s poems. The couple is said to be great lovers of Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, a 13th-century Muslim poet, jurist, and Sufi mystic, and shared their love for him by gifting collection of his poems to their special guests.
As their wedding planner had explained, “Anushka and Virat are extremely spiritual people, I don’t know how many people know this about them. She wanted everything to be about growth and prosperity, so the whole wedding was in fact inspired by the idea of an overgrown garden. They are big fans of Rumi and his poetry, so an anthology of his poems was given as a take-back present for all the guests.”
