The film, Batti Gul Meter Chalu is directed by Shree Narayan (of Toilet Ek Prem Katha fame). The film deals with the issue of electricity shortage in the country. The film is social comedy-drama and is set to be shot in Uttarakhand. Yami Gautam and Shraddha Kapoor will be seen as the leading ladies with Shahid. To announce the title of the film, Shahid posted a tweet on his Twitter handle saying, "this Diwali lets hope electricity is a right and not a privilege".
“Shahid plays a young local boy from Uttarakhand who is a diehard romantic,” producer Prerna Arora told a leading daily. “The costume designer duo has been working with artisans in villages of the North Indian state and sourcing fabrics locally to ensure authenticity. Shahid will be wearing lots of bright sweaters and jackets since the story unfolds in winter.” About Shraddha, she said, “She’s a bubbly girl and quite notorious in the first half of the film. Post interval, her character undergoes a transformation and with her behaviour, her look will also change”.
Yami, who will be seen playing a small town lawyer, says she is extremely excited about her role. Adding to her excitement is also the fact that she has a degree in law but she couldn't practise, so this is her chance of redeeming it. She has also been taking classes in Hindi Literature. Along with that, the actress is busy interacting with lawyers from small towns to understand her character better.
