What’s upsetting birthday boy Randhir Kapoor?

Tonight will be party time for the Kapoors at their Devnar house, as they celebrate Randhir Kapoor’s 71st birthday. Naturally, the paparazzi will be at hand to capture the comings and goings of this famous family. It’s not something that Randhir has an issue with – what gets his goat is the undue attention his grandchild Taimur Ali Khan, B-town’s Most Adorable Baby, receives.

The veteran actor-filmmaker opened up at the launch of the first edition of the Raj Kapoor awards yesterday. He blasted the culture of today that sees the constant camera presence robbing children of a normal childhood. “Every day I get up in the morning, and I see a picture of my grandson in the newspaper. The paparazzi are permanently stationed below the house. Now, everyone recognizes his maid also! That’s because of the paparazzi,” thundered Randhir.

Backing him up was brother Rishi, who was also at the event. “There is so much social exposure today. Earlier journals and magazines used to come every fortnightly. Now, every day we have news about films.”

The brothers also commented snarkily about the trends that the paparazzi culture has ushered in, in India. “The media has created this. Now, you have the ‘airport look’ and ‘gym look’ also,” observed Randhir, as the sharp-witted Rishi added, “There is a ‘chautha look’ (funeral look) too. You go to a funeral and everyone is like ‘look at his shade of beige, the glasses’.”

Randhir has addressed the scrutiny that Taimur is under, earlier as well. On the occasion of the tot’s first birthday on December 1, he had expressed his worries as a grandfather and hoped that the kid didn’t get too affected by the crazy media hype around him. He had added that he wants Taimur to have a normal upbringing like any other child and to take his own course when he grows up.
