Big B on a tweet high but followers’ number is still down

Amitabh Bachchan, who famously took on Twitter in disbelief when the online social networking service reduced his vast number of followers last month, is on a Tweet high today. The reason? A high-powered team from the Twitter HQ in San Francisco flew down to Mumbai to meet the Big B and assuage his angst over the lost followers last weekend.
Mr. Bachchan, who graciously met the Twitter team on the sets of his forthcoming film Thugs of Hindostan, was pleasantly surprised to learn the technical details of how the service operated. He tweeted last night, “The Twitter team came from across the seas to visit me at work and to explain to me how Twitter works… thank you! The truth of the working is so ‘apparent’.

What exactly the actor in India meant by this jubilant tweet is being discussed on the social networking service. Mr. Bachchan’s mastery of English and Hindi is well known. And he is also known to play with words when he wants to send a barbed message out to somebody. So, was he giving Twitter a rap on the knuckles for the considerable decline in his followers on the micro blogging site while appreciating its effort to come and meet him?
In response to his tweet, a follower innocently asked, “But don’t you already know how it works?” Mr. Bachchan was quick to respond, “You are missing the point about Twitter… ‘apparent’ is within quotes… if you have not understood the hidden meaning I shall explain it someday… not here.”

You remember, don’t you, the actor’s irritated tweet on January 31, “TWITTER!!! You reduced my number of followers!!?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! That's a joke… time to get off from you… thank you for the ride... there are many ‘other’ fish in the sea – and a lot more exciting.” At that time, sources uncharitably said that the Big B’s anger stemmed from the fact that Twitter’s action cost him the Most Followed Actor spot on Twitter to Shah Rukh Khan.

Mr. Bachchan did not refer to this upmanship himself. But Bollywood sources said that as somebody who popularized Twitter and got millions of Indians to take to the site, the Big B had every right to be displeased by Twitter’s arbitrary action. Social media pundits said Twitter was doing a global clean-up of fake followers on people’s accounts and Mr. Bachchan came under its purview. He lost a staggering 1,67,467 followers in a couple of days. But what stopped the Twitter team that came calling from bringing back the Big B's lost followers?
