UK media shows a clip of Tabu in its report on Sridevi’s death!

London-based journalist Fifi Haroon, who works with the BBC World Service as a broadcaster, has called out UK’s ITV News for their gaffe on the late Sridevi. While reporting the late actress’s death, the channel had started off showing a clip of Sri in a silver dress with her designer friend Manish Malhotra and elder daughter, Janhvi. However, the next clipping they show is not of Sridevi at all but of actress Tabu!

“Terrible,” ranted Haroon, “Why not just get someone who knows Bollywood to check!”

Indeed! Hopefully, the BBC itself has got “someone who knows Bollywood to check” after their recent gaffe following the death of Shashi Kapoor. The News at Ten had seen two video clips played as presenter Huw Edwards announced the death of the Bollywood actor died aged 79, last year. However, neither of the men shown were Kapoor – while one was Shashi’s nephew Rishi, the other was actor Amitabh Bachchan.

The programme's editor Paul Royall had apologized on Twitter for the mistake shortly after the bulletin aired, writing, “BBC News 10 is very sorry wrong images were used to mark the death of Shashi Kapoor. Not our usual standards and I apologize for any upset.”

The gaffe had drawn its share of criticism. While Adil Ray, the creator, and co-writer of BBC One's Citizen Khan, tweeted: “Someone at the BBC thought the brown person in this VT is the same person,” Aasmah Mir, who presents Saturday Live on BBC Radio 4, said she was "really annoyed" by the error.

The error by ITV also drew its share of censure on social media, with users expressing their disappointment. In reply to one tweet that attempted to make light of the error, Haroon maintained, “No – media has to be accurate. It’s not called faarigh bethana. It was one of the top headlines. They HAVE to report it properly or people will complain to OFFCOM.

Another user also pointed out, “Daily Mail almost got it right… but managed to put one photo of Ileana D’Cruz in!”
