Wrestle Mania: Salman’s serial on Great Gama to roll

After long months of waiting, Salman Khan’s first TV production is set to go on the floors within the next few months.

News of Salman’s interest in telling this story had made headlines last year. After a very successful stint as host for ‘Bigg Boss’ and ‘10 Ka Dum’, it had been revealed that Salman Khan would venture into another new territory after story writing, singing, lyrics writing, film production and online business – that of television production. He would make his debut in TV production with an ambitious project on wrestler Gama Pehalwan.

Incidentally, Salman had previously toyed with the idea of making a film on wrestler Gama Pehalwan. However, around the same time, actor-producer John Abraham had also announced a film on the same wrestler. Neither of the projects crystallized but now Salman will take the story forward for a TV show.

Buzz has it that while Sohail Khan will play the protagonist who remained undefeated in a career spanning 52 years, TV star Mohd. Nazim of the daily soap ‘Saath Nibhaana Saathiya’ will essay the role of his brother, Imam Baksh. While an official confirmation is yet awaited, interest is already high in this project, which will offer different and thrilling content on the idiot box.

Gama was born Ghulam Hussain in the village of Jabbowal in Punjab into an ethnic Kashmiri family of wrestlers. He was noticed at the age of 10 when he entered a strongman competition held in Jodhpur. The contest was attended by more than 400 wrestlers and Gama, who was among the last 15, was named the winner by the Maharaja of Jodhpur because he was the youngest. He was subsequently trained by the Maharaja of Datia. He arrived in the UK in April 1910 with two other wrestlers, Ahmed Bux and Gama to participate in the European catch wrestling tournaments. The Great Gama, as he had been called, was awarded the Indian version of the World Heavyweight Championship on Oct. 15, 1910.

The TV series is touted to be a big budget finite series. Veteran actor Puneet Issar is writing and directing the show. Apparently, the team had shot the pilot last year in Patiala, which was met with approval by Star Plus. As of now, the team is sorting out the actors’ dates and working out the logistics. The plan is to shoot the series like a film in Punjab, on a set in Mumbai and at some stadiums in London.
