Vishal Bharadwaj, after writing the National Award-winning screenplay for Junglee Pictures’ Talvar in 2015, will again be collaborating with the production house for a sequel. Talvar 2 will be based on the murder case of seven-year-old student Pradyumn Thakur of Ryan International School, Gurgaon. This collaboration will see true –crime stories adapted for the silver screen. Talvar, starred Konkan Sen Sharma, Irrfan Khan and Neeraj Kabi in lead roles and the movie garnered critical and commercial success for its gritty and edge account of the 2008 Aarushi-Hemraj double murder investigation.
Bharardwaj will not only be writing the story for Talvar 2 but will also be directing the movie. The murder case shocked and grieved the entire nation when a Class 2 student was found with his throat slit in the school bathroom in September 2018. The case gripped the entire nation and sparked a fierce debate on the safety of children inside school premises, on juvenile crimes and the stress and pressure put on children. After a lot of investigation, the prime suspect emerged as a 16-year-old student of the same school.
The first film was based on the Aarushi-Hemraj case and was a fictional dramatization of the murder case that has still not left the nation’s psyche. Taking about Talvar, Bharadwaj said, “Talvar was about much more than the heinous crime itself. The film held up a mirror to society and exposed several loopholes in the system. Such crimes shake the very moral fabric of society and need to be analysed in a much deeper sense. The world is not just black and white, there’s more to a crime than just victim and perpetrator. That’s why we have decided to continue making true crime procedurals like Talvar.”

It is a telling example of how big screen stories, when handled honestly and sensitively, have the power to alter the lives of people associated with the real incident.
