"I regret this": Tripura CM apologies after shaming former Miss World Diana Hayden

A month old Chief Minister of the Tripura state, Biplap Deb, sure knows how to keep himself in the media light. Earlier, his memorable remark "Internet existed in the times of Mahabharata" kept the internet laughing for a quite some time. Now that it was over, he brought himself back in the spotlight when he commented on former Miss World Diana Hayden and her skin colour.

Post garnering all the negative attention, Biplab Deb now came to the front and apologized. He said, "I was talking about how the handlooms of the state could be marketed well. If anybody is hurt or feeling defamed, I regret this… I respect all women as my mother, for his remarks. In a statement he said,"

Yesterday, Diana came in the forefront and lashed at the CM for his insensible remarks. "That's some strong disapproval of me winning the Miss World title," Diana said in a statement. "With regards to me winning the Miss World, it's a pity and shame, that when you win the biggest and most respected beauty pageant in the world, you get criticised and put down as opposed to being appreciated and respected for bringing more accolades back home and further appreciation of our Indian brown exotic beauty. It's also hurtful," she added.

Addressing an event in the state a few days back, the CM alleged that the former Miss World (Diana) did not deserve the title and that it was a farce all along. In fact, he even called the jury members of these beauty pageants a "marketing mafia" who decided the winners beforehand. He said, "These beauty pageant organizers are international marketing mafia, who spotted a huge market in the country. They make the girls walk with fabric on the ramps. Those who give the certificates are all international textile market mafia. They plan beforehand who will get the award and this is 100 percent true,"

Obviously, his comments did not go well with the people of Tripura, Diana, various activists, people outside the state and the internet. People called out to him on various platforms expressing their disappointment on Deb's comments. As the ritual goes, Twitterati was at its job again. A famous columnist, Salil Tripathi tweeted saying, "If Biplab deb didn’t exist, a comic writer would have invented him."
