The jaws that hit the floor when the teaser of Sanju was unveiled have stayed right there… How could Ranbir Kapoor look so freakily like Sanjay Dutt? – has been the question on every lip. Well, a good bit of credit for that magic goes to prosthetic specialist Dr Suresh Murkey. He is the man who has worked his artistry on the likes of Abhishek Bachchan for Guru, Vidya Balan in The Dirty Picture, and Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu Returns.
Of course, working in Sanju has been almost like working in four different films, as Dr Murkey helped create four distinct looks for Ranbir Kapoor, detailing Sanjay Dutt’s looks over the years.

Dr Murkey really is something of a genius. He didn’t even need to meet with Dutt to understand his face; just studying the actor’s photographs at different stages in his life was enough. Based on these images he designed the prosthetics for Ranbir. He also took four sets of measurements of Ranbir’s face in order to ensure perfect results.

The process of turning Kapoor into Dutt, so to speak, required Dr. Murkey to work on the lower half of Kapoor's face. He shares that he needed to make Ranbir's jaw bone look different to resemble Dutt's. He also had to make his cheeks look puffy, particularly in the lip area. In the latter part of the film, he added age to Ranbir’s face by using prosthetics on the upper part of his mouth. This made Ranbir’s cheeks could look fuller near the nose and below the eyes. And that is how Ranbir turned into Sanju…

Incidentally, Dr. Murkey himself is astounded by the final results. He admits that he never thought that Ranbir Kapoor would be able to look so uncannily like Sanjay Dutt on the screen. He can’t help marvelling at how Ranbir worked on his body to bulk up like Sanjay Dutt, and aced everything including Dutt’s signature walk. We know; we are smitten too!
