Sonam Kapoor: I want to have a successful marriage

Bollywood has been a testimony to some of the very successful marriages eventually falling apart. Couples once head-over-heels in love called it quits and parted ways after years of togetherness. It is said ‘every relation comes with an expiry date’, but only a few taste the success of a lasting bond that stands the test of time. While divorces are common in the tinsel town, the idea of separation is off the table if you are Sonam Kapoor. The actress, who has been in a steady relationship with beau Anand Ahuja, is all set to tie the knot on May 8, 2018. But she has always known the key ingredients to a perfect marriage.

Sonam Kapoor is as choosy with her words as she is with her ensemble. Thus, when she was asked by a leading magazine, back in 2015, about her thoughts on marriage, she replied saying:

“I do believe in it, but one should get into it only when they are ready for commitment and has found the right person. Marriage comes with a lot of responsibilities and you need to be ready for it. I want to have a successful marriage, not just for the sake of it. Whenever I will get married, I will ensure that I work towards it to make it a success”

However, people today, Sonam feels, don’t take commitment seriously – the reason for high rate of breakups and divorces according to her. “People today don’t take commitment seriously. It is very easy for everyone to walk in and walk out of a relationship,” she says thoughtfully before adding, “According to me, a relationship needs lot of patience, lots of give and take, and accepting one another with faults,” Sonam told the magazine.

If your parents are Anil and Sunita Kapoor, you know exactly what a perfect marriage looks like. Sonam said, “I have seen my parents… they dated each other for 11 years before getting married, and then they have been married for almost 31 years now… it has been that long and undoubtedly they still love each other immensely. Both of them have their flaws, both of them have some annoying habits which they hate in each other, but they love each other despite their flaws. So basically you need to stick it out.”

She further added, “We youngsters don’t know how to stick it out…we don’t even try. People do not work hard enough on relationships. It is hard work to make a marriage work. If you really love the person, then you make that effort to work towards it.” Clearly, the fashion icon has steered clear of any doubts and knows exactly what she wants!
