After 17 years, Sequel to Tabu's 'Chandni Bar' receives a green light

The crime drama Chandni Bar will finally go on the floors by the end of the year and will be helmed by the director Madhur Bhandarkar himself. Confirming the news, Shailesh R Singh who will be producing the film informed a leading daily, “I am really excited to produce Chandni Bar 2 with Madhur as the director once again. I have already acquired the rights to the film and can’t wait to take it on the floors.”

A source close to the project told a leading daily, “Madhur has put in a lot of research on the aftermath of the 2005 ban on dance bars and has set the film around the same time and subject. He has a lot of material ready and work on the script has already begun.”

“The casting process will begin once Madhur has locked the final draft, while the film is expected to roll by the year-end," they further added.

While the original movie revolved around Mumtaz Ansari's, essayed by Tabu, experiences at the Chandni Bar a leading daily reports that the director is planning to cover the aftermath of 2005 ban on dance bars in Mumbai.

The 2001 National Award Winning film starred Tabu and Atul Kulkarni in the lead was revolved around the gritty life of the Mumbai underworld, including prostitution, dance bars and gun crime. The film which also stars Ananya Khare, Rajpal Yadav, Minakshi Sahani and Vishal Thakkar went on to bag four National Film Awards and was critically acclaimed by many.

The year 2001 was Madhur Bhandarkar's annus mirabilis as it got him critical and commercial success. His films such as Page 3, Traffic Signal and Fashion became instant audience favourites. However, his recent films such as Heroine, Calendar Girls and Indu Sarkar haven't been able to garner the love and appreciation like before. Therefore, it only makes sense the director decided to return back to where it all started.
