“It’s natural in sport” Preity explains her reaction at Mumbai Indians losing

After her video wherein she expresses her joy at Mumbai Indians' failure to qualify for the IPL 2018 knockouts, Preity Zinta explains just why she was celebrating. The actress stirred up something of a hornet’s nest when a video went viral of herself telling someone during the CSK vs KXIP match that she was happy Mumbai had failed to make it to the playoffs. Her lip-movements were quick to be deciphered as to read: “I am just very happy that Mumbai is not going to the finals... Really happy.”

Even as Twitter went into a tizzy with all manner of remarks and questions asking about her comment, the Kings XI Punjab co-owner has come out to explain why she was so happy in the first place. Preity clarifies that she was happy only because Mumbai's defeat meant there was a chance for her team, KXIP to go through. Defending champions Mumbai Indians needed to win their match against Delhi Daredevils on Sunday to stay in the running for the race to the playoffs. Eventually, MI lost to Daredevils by 11 runs.

In the match that followed, Preity’s team, KXIP had to defeat Chennai Super Kings by a huge margin to make it to the knockout stages. CSK had to score less than 100 runs if KXIP were to go through. However, they lost their chance when CSK raced past the 100-run mark. King’s XI lost to CSK by five wickets. Both KXIP and Mumbai Indians were knocked out of the tournament.

Mumbai Indians supporters who are upset by Preity’s statement, however, will be glad that KXIP lost both their matches against MI this season. On May 4, Preity’s team went down by six wickets and then lost a thriller on May 16 by three runs. Preity has also tweeted her disappointment at her team’s performance. While apologizing to KXIP fans and supporters for not being up to the mark this season, she points that it was shocking that after winning 5 out of 6 games, in the beginning, King’s XI would have to exit the IPL. “Next year we won’t let you down,” she wrote, adding the hashtag #disappointed.
