Not Kangana but Amyra plays Rajkummar’s simple, chirpy love interest in 'Mental Hai Kya'

The Kangana Ranaut-Rajkummar Rao starrer Mental Hai Kya has a new addition to its cast – the lovely Amyra Dastur will be seen in the film, playing a simple, chirpy girl next door. She will play Rajkummar’s love interest in this off-beat film, and most of her scenes are opposite the actor. Amyra, who was seen in Kung Fu Yoga and Saif-starrer Kaalakaandi, will be shooting in Mumbai. While Kangana has already started filming, Rajkummar joined the sets recently and has even pierced his ears for the film.

Amyra’s character will clearly be the one stable entity in this film, which is already raising eyebrows with its dark humour posters. Touted to be a psychological thriller, Rajkummar Rao had stated that he decided to take up the project because of its "unique script".

Kangana, on the other hand, had shared that her reason was personal. “The way my life unfolded in the past few years, I realized there was so much stigma attached to being different. 'Mental' or 'psycho' were the terms used to shame me, but these can't be used casually as swear words. When this script came along, I knew I had to do it to break the stigma around it. High time we made individuality aspirational,” she had declared.

The posters of Mental Hai Kya appear quirky at first but reflect a darker truth. They portray the characters’ mental illness and hallucinations, and their suicidal tendencies. Kangana had revealed that though the film deals with mental illness, “We won't show people as pitiable, sympathy-seeking characters. We'll portray the issue with sensitivity. The film takes a stand against equating individuality with madness.”

The film sees Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao's collaborate for the second time after the path-breaking Queen, which released in 2014. Rajkummar had shared, “I’m a great admirer of her work, be it in Tanu Weds Manu or its sequel. We both play unique characters and it will be great to see how we execute it.”
