Abandoned by her son, ‘Pakeezah’ actress Geeta Kapoor passes away at 59

Veteran actress Geeta Kapoor, best known for her role in Pakeezah 1972, passed away today morning at 9.00 am. She breathed her last in an old age home in the suburbs of Mumbai. The news of her death was shared by Central Board of Film Certification member Ashoke Pandit on his Facebook profile. The last rites will be carried out later. Until then, the police is waiting for any response from her blood relatives.

Pandit has been taking care of the late actress since she was first abandoned by her son midway through her treatment in Mumbai. He did not only oversee the treatment but also paid for her medical bills. He said, “We will keep the mortal remains for two days at Cooper Hospital and if they don’t arrive, we will together give her a dignified exit from this world.”

Her son, Raja Kapoor, is said to be a choreographer while her daughter is an air hostess. Last month her health started deteriorating and her son took her to a nearby hospital on April 21. And after that, he never returned to visit his mother. In fact, he even left the house that the family had been staying in.

The late actress had garnered a name for her in the Hindi film industry and has been associated in over a hundred films. Though she made her mark only with Pakeezah where she played the second wife to Rajkumar.

Pandit also tweeted about the same. He thanked filmmaker Ramesh Taurani and Archana Shourie for their support. The last rites will be carried on Monday. Pandit said that she died a natural death and waiting for son to return only made her weaker. He also mentioned that the mortal remains will be kept in the Cooper Hospital in Mumbai for the next two days, waiting for her family.
