Not long ago, we had heard news of Imtiaz Ali’s in-the-planning venture with Shahid Kapoor, falling through. Apparently, the film was unable to find financiers as the subject was thought to be too offbeat. This had to have been a hard knock for Imtiaz, who has tried to push the envelope with his own unique take on cinema.
Well, now it appears that his days of financial insecurity getting in the way of creative satisfaction, are a thing of the past. The news comes in that he and the Anil Ambani-owned Reliance Entertainment have announced the formation of Window Seat Films, LLP, a 50:50 joint venture for the production of films.
This is Reliance Entertainment’s fifth such partnership with an Indian filmmaker to form a production company. Reliance Entertainment has other existing partnerships with Phantom Films (Anurag Kashyap, Madhu Mantena, Vikas Bahl and Vikramaditya Motwane), Rohit Shetty Picturez, Plan C Studios (Neeraj Pandey) and Y NOT Films (S. Sashikanth).
A statement released by Reliance Entertainment mentions that this creative and business partnership will benefit from the artistic abilities of Ali, and the global marketing and distribution capabilities of Reliance Entertainment.

Speaking about Window Seat, Imtiaz Ali said, “There is a common vision that Window Seat Films and Reliance Entertainment share in terms of content that we would like to make, the kind of stories that we would like to tell and the way we want to collaborate. Working under this partnership is like working for myself.”
Equally encouraging was Amitabh Jhunjhunwala, Vice Chairman, Reliance Entertainment, who declared, “We are proud to have Imtiaz as our partner. Despite his success, he is a person of deep simplicity and humility, and we are looking forward to making great movies together.”
One hopes this move brings back the Imtiaz Ali spark that had faded to some extent, going by his last film, Jab Harry Met Sejal.
