Late actor Sunil Dutt was an actor par excellence and a man of such staunch principles and quiet dignity that even today he is remembered and revered for his honesty. Born as Balraj Dutt, Sunil remains one of the most revered actors of Bollywood. He was married to Nargis Dutt, another great actor of her times with whom he had three children – actor Sanjay Dutt and daughters Priya and Namrata Dutt.
Sunil was not only an actor but he also was a producer and a director. In his later years he turned to politics and held the important portfolio of Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports in Manmohan Singh’s government. The veteran actor also holds an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records for his film Yaadein. The entry is in the category for the Fewest Actors in a Narrative Film. The film was made in 1964 and is directed and produced by Dutt himself. It is a black and white film that stars only Sunil Dutt. The only other actor that appears on screen is his wife Nargis Dutt who appears only in a silhouette in the final scene.

The film’s narrative progresses through dialogues, reminiscences and background music. Vasant Desai gave the background score including two songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The film’s plot revolves around a man who comes home to find his wife and son is not at home; thinking that they have left him, he starts to reminisce his life with them and without them and starts to have misgivings and regrets about his past indiscretions. The film is a soliloquy and only Dutt’s character speaks in the film. In the 113 minutes film, Sunil is the only actor that appears on the screen.
In the upcoming biopic on Sanjay Dutt’s life, the role of Dutt senior will be essayed by Paresh Rawal. Rawal said that bringing Dutt’s honesty, dignity and pain on screen was the most challenging part of the role.
