After doing a series of serious roles in films like Omerta, Newton, Trapped and even Shaadi Mein Zarror Aana, Rajkummar Rao is finally back on the silver screen with a light-hearted comedy film. Titled 5 Weddings the film also stars Nargis Fakhri in the lead role. The trailer of the film promises it to be a fun watch. Nargis essays the role of an international magazine journalist who has been given a specific task – to cover Indian weddings and find out more about the rituals. Rajkummar plays the role of a cop who is entrusted to tail her.

Nargis’s character in the film has Indian roots but she does not know anything about India or the big-fat-weddings characteristic of our country. The film is a casual romantic comedy flick that banks on Nargis’s NRI-esque appeal and Rajkummar’s small-town cop routine.  The trailer is a colourful mixture of how India is perceived by her western counterparts but escalates into a warm love story between the two protagonists.

The soundtrack has a typical Punjabi feel to it. The film takes a turn when Nargis meets a group of transgender dancers (hijras) who typically dance at weddings and give blessings to the bride and groom in exchange for money. Soon she falls in love with her ‘shadow cop’ Rajkummar and the real reason for her being in India takes a backseat.

The film might not have a mass appeal but Nargis’s portrayal of a typical misinformed NRI makes one smile. Rajkummar’s character seems lovable and affable and a man that can be depended upon. He does not have major dialogues or a very meaty role as Nargis seems to be the main focus in the film.

The climax of the film is still under wraps but going by the trailer and the punchlines one can deduce that the film will be a typical one where the character finally finds what he or she was searching for in life and finds it at a point when he or she was least expecting it. Besides Rajkummar and Nargis the film stars Golden Globe nominee Bo Derek and Academy Award-nominee Candy Clark. The film is directed by Namrata Singh Gujral and is slated for a September 21, 2018, release.
