Sending out virtual hugs to Rajkumar Hirani for finally giving us the news we have waited nearly a decade to hear… The Sanju filmmaker has confirmed that there will be a sequel to the hugely popular 3 Idiots, which had released back in 2009. "I definitely want to make a sequel to 3 Idiots. In fact, Abhijat [Joshi, writer] and I started writing something a few days ago. But it's still in the initial stage and we will take a fair amount of time to develop the script,” he confirmed.
The filmmaker has constantly faced queries about a possible sequel to the huge entertainer with a social message that was 3 Idiots. Aamir played the role of a 24-year-old engineering student in the film alongside R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. There has been buzz about a possible sequel for some time.
In fact, at the special screening of Hirani’s latest production Saala Khadoos, Aamir Khan had revealed, “Raju Hirani has given me a hint about 3 Idiots’ sequel and I am giving you all a hint. The film will happen if and whenever he will write the script. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.”
Known to spend months and years on perfecting the script – any reason why his films are such thumping critically acclaimed and commercially booming successes?! – it will be a while before the sequel will roll. Apparently after the Sanjay Dutt biopic hits theatres this June, Hirani will pick up the third instalment of the Munna Bhai series. The script is nearly complete and it will feature the series’ popular leading man, Sanjay Dutt.

By the time he is done with filming Munna Bhai 3, the sequel to 3 Idiots will be ready to roll. The film will most likely see Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and R Madhavan reprising the lead roles, with Hirani reportedly planning to bring back the original lead cast. In fact, Sharman recently confirmed that Hirani had shared the idea with all three of them and that he personally couldn’t wait for it to materialise.
