Ranbir Kapoor does not have the confidence to do a period film

Ranbir Kapoor is once again the toast-of-the-town with his superb portrayal of Sanjay Dutt in the biopic Sanju. The actor was not having a great time with his recent debacles like Jagga Jasoos. Bombay Velvet and Besharam, is back again in the reckoning with the Rajkumar Hirani film. However, coming from Hindi cinema’s first film family that was started by legendary actor Prithviraj Kapoor, Ranbir has never taken up a role in a period drama film.

Prithviraj Kapoor is well-known for essaying the role of Emperor Akbar in the magnum opus Mughal-e-Azam. When Ranbir was asked by a leading daily whether he would like to be a part of the epic film if a remake is made he said, “I am unsure whether I would want to work on a remake of the film. However, if a sequel is made, I would love to be a part of it. I don’t have the confidence to do a period film.”

Ranbir’s assertion comes as a surprise as nowadays many period dramas and historical films are being made. Also, noteworthy is the fact that he made his debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali who is known for making larger-than-life magnum opus like Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastani. Talking about Bhansali, Ranbir said, “I think Mr Bhansali is a great director of period films, he has done justice to Padmaavat and Bajirao Mastani.”

However, Ranbir does have Shamshera in the pipeline which is a period film directed by Karan Malhotra. Talking about the film where he would be sharing screen space with Sanjay Dutt he said, “I will be playing a very macho role which is a first for me. In is an action film, a story of a dacoit based in the 1800’s.” He further added, “I will also be doing another period film soon.”

However, when the Sanju actor was asked whether he would like to work in a biopic made on his own grandfather Raj Kapoor, Ranbir told the daily, “My grandfather and the people in his life were involved in many incidents. I don't think my family would like a film to be made about him. A biopic should be honest and not be a piece of propaganda. If a human being has faults, they should be shown in the film. I don’t think my family is ready for that. However, if they do permit an honest film to be made on him, I may do it.”
