India’s first Cricket World Cup win of 1983 will soon be made into a film directed by Kabir Khan and starring Ranveer Singh in the lead. The film is supposed to be a biopic on Kapil Dev and is titled ’83, and is scheduled to hit the screens in August 2019.
It is expected to go on floors later this year. As reported by a leading daily, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has been approached for the part of the winning team’s coach. The actor has been in talks for the role and is expected to come onboard soon. If all goes well then this will be the second collaboration of Nawaz and Kabir as the actor earlier worked with the director in Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan.
Although no confirmation has come from the filmmakers’ end, Kabir told the daily that it is too early to comment on the casting. The 1983 Prudential Cup is one of the milestones achieved by India in the game of cricket. The team was underdog in the tournament that went on to clinch the trophy.

India won the world cup defeating West Indies which were the clear favourites and finalists for the third time. India was led by Kapil Dev and had some superb cricketers like Mohinder Amarnath, Sunil Gavaskar, Kris Srikkanth, Yashpal Sharma, Sandeep Patil, Kirti Azad, Roger Binny, Madan Lal, Syed Kirmani and Balwinder Sandhu.
Interestingly, the winning team had no coach as at that time having a coach for national sides wasn’t a common practice. However, it was customary to have a team manager on foreign tours and for the World Cup; the team’s manager was PR Man Singh who was an official of the Hyderabad Cricket Association. Now, it remains to be seen what role Nawazuddin plays in the biopic as his character might have some fictional tones to it as well.
