“You’re your best friend”: Priyanka advises women via Allure

Priyanka Chopra is driving some relevant points home regarding pre-conceptions of beauty... She shares, “So, we’re doing this amazing shoot for Allure. I literally have like no make-up on my face and just some lip balm and I haven’t blow-dried my hair. It was this natural beauty thing and the photographer decided to go close-up.”

In the extreme close-up, she could see pores, swelling, freckles... “So what did I expect my face to look like? Photoshopped, filtered, all the filters that we use to smooth out our faces for Instagram... I mean, we all do it, I’ve done it.”

Then she questions whether we have ever really thought why we, as women, feel the need to smooth out our wrinkles, and our blemishes, whereas guys can have beards and pores and scars – and it is called character!

“Since eons, we have been told as women, this is what we should look like and this is the standard of beauty that we need to follow. And you know why that is? Because we have always been treated as second-class citizens,” she summarises.

She adds, “We’ve always been told that only one of us can win and only the best one will get the cutest boy … Can we for a second love ourselves and say ‘I do not need all of these magazines to tell me to how to lose the weight or how should I starve because I want to please a man?’”

Priyanka goes on to advise readers to start with just recognizing what they are doing. “That’s called self-hate, self-doubt, you’re berating yourself. We have enough people doing that to us anyway, why do we need to do it to ourselves? Love yourself, ladies. You're your best friend.”

Priyanka also added that she loves the idea of bringing a digital cover to Allure and is thrilled with the amazing job that the team did. In turn, Allure loves that they “can shine a light on an Indian woman who’s changing the game.”

That she sure is!
