Ra. One sequel on Shah Rukh Khan's mind, reveals director Anubhav Sinha

Shah Rukh Khan has had many firsts in his glorious professional life spanning across 26 years. He took up playing negative characters early on in his career, entered the production space with Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, and his home banner Red Chillies Entertainment boasts of an amazing VFX unit. Sample Ra.One. Although the SRK, Kareena Kapoor and Arjun Rampal starrer could not fetch the desired numbers, its extraordinary VFX skills were lauded widely.

Seven years on, the superstar plans to take the desi superhero franchise ahead. Director Abhinav Sinha revealed to a leading newspaper that a sequel to the sci-fi thriller in on their mind. “Shah Rukh and I keep talking about it. But I don’t know, nothing’s happening for now. It’s never easy to make a sci-fi film. But I know someday, over a drink, we will jump into it. It’s on his mind and it’s on my mind too,” Sinha told the daily.

“It’s not an easy movie to make, and we have to take that plunge. We keep meeting, we are good friends, and we have many things to discuss beyond films,” Sinha added.

In December 2015, Khan himself had confirmed that he will indeed return with a follow-up film. “I will 100 per cent make the sequel. There are no two ways about it. By nature I am not someone to give up on a dream — be it KKR or Ra.One. Of course we will make it better now, because we have five more years of amazing experience in technology. I think we are the only ones who have it in this country. Inshaallah, we will figure a story and I will speak to Anubhav Sinha again. The film will be called G.One. It requires planning and today we have a good set up,” he had told the same daily three years ago.

A report published in the past even suggests that the team at Red Chillies has begun work on Ra. One sequel. “The team has started making sketches of SRK’s character G.One and are working on how to make it better. They are exploring many options and are trying out new things,” the newspaper had quoted a source as saying.

Ra. One had made a business of Rs 163 crore and as Khan asserts, had quite an impressive weekend collection too. The film was a pioneer of its kind for it was the first time a Bollywood production company had entirely worked on the VFX from start to finish. Looks like Khan is keen on making it bigger and better this time! If the film actually goes on floors, will the original star cast be retained? Only time will tell.
