Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s upcoming film Thackeray is a biopic based on the life and times of Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray and is one of the most anticipated films. The film has finally got a release date as the makers have finally revealed that the biopic will hit the screens next year on January 23, 2019, commemorating Balasaheb’s birth anniversary. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to reveal the film’s release date and also revealed that Carnival Motion Pictures will collaborate with Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut’s Rauters Entertainment to co-produce the biopic.
The film is directed by Abhijit Panse and is made in Hindi and Marathi. Thackeray founded Shiv Sena in 1966 and functioned as its head till 2004 when he gave way to his son Uddhav Thackeray to take up the reigns. This created a rift between him and his nephew Raj Thackeray who was hoping to be the next-in-command and propelled him to create another party called Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
Carnival Group founder and Chairperson Shrikant Bhasi said in a press release on Wednesday that Bal Thackeray was an example of how a common man can be the change. He said, “We are glad to be associated with Thackeray the film that showcases the life journey of Balasaheb and the histrionics of Nawazuddin Siddiqui.” Raut had also said in the press release, “If there is ever a person whose biography should be made after Mahatma Gandhi, it is Balasaheb Thackeray. We welcome Carnival Motion Pictures to join us in reaching this film to millions of people the world over wanting to know more about the story of Balasaheb Thackeray, a man who brought out the superpowers of the common man with his sheer presence.”
In 2015, a Marathi film titled Balkadu was also conceptualized by Raut who is also the executive editor of Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamna. The film was based on the party’s ideology. Thackeray remained one of the most well-known and popular politicians of the modern era and even now after his death, his fan followers have not lessened. Thackeray was a cartoonist and writer in a popular daily and later on went on to establish his own party which became instrumental in Maharashtra’s politics.
This is the third biopic for Nawazuddin who has previously done Ketan Mehta's Manjhi - The Mountain Man and Nandita Das's Manto. We are sure he will bring to life Thackeray's ideologies beautifully on celluloid.
