It is considerably rare for an actor like Aamir Khan to discuss his personal life on a public platform. But the 53-year-old actor is certainly capable of doing the unthinkable at times as he spoke at length about his relationship with wife Kiran Rao and ex-wife Reena Dutta during an interview with the Chinese media.

Aamir met Kiran while filming Lagaan in 2001 and revealed during the interview that they weren’t even friends, then, let alone a relationship. In fact, Aamir was married to Reena Dutta since 1986 and also has two children with her – son Junaid and daughter Ira. In 2002, however, Aamir filed for divorce from Reena and while enduring the wrath of an emotional turmoil, met Kiran as she became his sole source of support.

"I met her when I was doing Lagaan. She was one of the ADs of that film. But at that time, we were not in a relationship. We were not even great friends. She was one of the people on the unit. After my separation and divorce, after some time I met her again. In that moment of trauma, her phone came and I talked to her for half an hour. When I put the phone down, I said, 'My God, I will so happy when I talk to her.' It struck me in that instant,” Aamir told Chinese media.

That phonecall did wonders, Aamir said, as he started dating her soon after and also lived together for more than a year before getting married in a private ceremony in 2005. “I can never imagine my life without Kiran as my partner. I feel very blessed and I feel very grateful for it,” he added.
