Sui Dhaaga: Here’s what Anushka Sharma said about memes on her character Mamta

Soon after the trailer of Varun Dhawan’s and Anushka Sharma’s film Sui Dhaaga released in August, several memes on the actress’ character popped up on social media; simply because the internet loves attention and doesn’t mind even humiliating celebrities on this regard. But Anushka didn’t mind at all, folks. Instead, she loved those myriad memes and shared it with the cast and crew of the film as well.

While speaking to a leading daily, Anushka said, "I thought the memes were hilarious. I kept sharing them with Varun, Sharat [Katariya, director] and my friends." Several memes on Anushka’s character Mamta were designed by folks – especially surrounding her appearance in a scene in which she depicts tears of joy – a rather intense emotion.

While some compared Mamta to a student clearing a difficult exam, certain others also juxtaposed her picture on the Statue of Liberty with reference to the scene in question. The 30-year-old actress, on the contrary, has a different opinion on memes altogether. She is glad that people couldn’t get over her character that soon and that Mamta is somebody, who can be easily related to.

“It is a compliment that my character has been stuck in people's head after they watched the trailer. Mamta has become a figure that everyone identifies with. Memes have become a common feature today. People actually dedicate time to make them. But in our case, it happened naturally and that too, on a huge scale,” Anushka added.

Sui Dhaaga espouses self-reliance and narrates a story inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy. The plotline also gives impetus to the Make In India campaign.
