Varun Dhawan on pay gap: Told Alia to increase her fee as she takes very little money

Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt started off their Bollywood journey together with Karan Johar’s Student of the Year and went on to star in films like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and Badrinath Ki Dulhania. The films not only managed to rake in moolah at the box-office but their onscreen chemistry was appreciated by the audience and critics alike. But it would not be wrong to say that despite being bankable stars, pay disparity in still prevalent in Bollywood.

In a recent interview with an eminent journalist, Varun expressed his displeasure that a male actor in our country is paid more in comparison to his female contemporary. Addressing the issue, he said, “Why has it taken the trade and the industry as a whole until a Raazi to realise that Alia Bhatt is a big star. Be it Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and even 2 States, they were all hits and Alia Bhatt was just as responsible for its success as I was or Arjun was (Arjun Kapoor was the male lead in 2 States).”

He further suggested that the pay gap is unfair and female actors should be paid equally. Well, kudos to Varun for supporting his female co-stars.

Interestingly, Varun also revealed how he always told Alia to hike her fee. “I would always tell Alia, what are you doing? You take very little money. Are you stupid? Increase your price,” he added. Varun will reunite with Alia in Abhishek Varman's Kalank, which is bankrolled by Dharma Productions.

Meanwhile, the actor is currently promoting Sui Dhaaga: Made in India alongside Anushka Sharma. Directed by Sharat Katariya, the film is slated to release on September 28.
