Anurag Kashyap's latest film Manmarziyaan got embroiled into controversy recently when certain members of the Sikh community took offense to a few scenes, starring Abhishek Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu. Now reacting to the 'brewing controversy', the filmmaker issued a 'genuine apology' on Twitter and said that the film is not commenting on a particular community but is 'talking about individuals and their choices'.
For the unversed, RTI activist Gurvinder Singh Chadha had filed a complaint against Anurag and the actors on Wednesday in Haldwani, alleging that the film disrespects the religious faith of Sikh community and showing characters smoking was offensive. This led to Anurag justifying his motive behind the particular scene and claimed that at every step of the way, the film's team asked for guidance from Sikh people.

In his statement, the filmmaker further clarified that the crew took the advice of the public, who informed them that the character should remove his turban in a respectful way before going out for a smoke. "The city of Amritsar opened their hearts and doors to us and everything was done with utmost care. Not a single thing was shot without guidance. We wanted to show things the way they are,” he added.
Anurag also refuted claims of the turban being removed in an "objectionable" manner and said, "Most of the 150 people in the crowd were Sikhs and we were told that’s how it is." Dismissing the proposal to cut the smoking scenes, he concluded by requesting everyone to not make this issue political while hitting back at people who picked at his film in order to seek attention.
Manmarziyaan, also starring Vicky Kaushal, released on September 14 and has been garnering a fabulous response from the audience and critics alike.
