Every man cannot be a sexual predator: Pooja Bhatt on the #MeToo deluge in India

Pooja Bhatt, who a few days back, revealed that she was in an abusive relationship stated that every man in this world is not a sexual predator. Her statement comes at a time when many Bollywood celebrities have been accused of sexual misconduct and the media industry are reeling under the deluge of sexual harassment allegations. Pooja said, “Every man in this world, just because he is a man, cannot be a sexual predator. And every woman, just because she is a woman, is not necessarily a victim. Sometimes she is also the perpetrator. To paint every man with the same brush is unfair.”

She said that there is a need to look at the matter in a more balanced and open manner. Pooja said, “Is it a reality in Bollywood? Yes, but it is a reality in media, politics, and college. It is a reality in every place where there is an exchange of power. If there is an exchange of power, there are situations where a woman utilizes her sexuality to be able to gain that foothold. There are women who marry someone because he is a powerful person. That’s not different from a woman who wants to go out there and exchange sexual favours for fame.”

She further added, “There are also cases where men have been blamed for cases where they were truly innocent and yet there is a trial by media before and then the court case comes in their favour but by then their reputation and family life is ruined already.”

Tanushree Dutta has accused Nana Patekar of sexually harassing and intimidating her on the sets of the 2008 film Horn Ok Pleasss. Following her revelation, many more such cases of harassment have come to light. Director Vikas Bahl has also been accused of sexually harassing a woman who used to work at Phantom Films. The allegations have been supported by Kangana Ranaut and Anurag Kashyap. Phantom Films have since then dissolved and today Hrithik Roshan who is the lead in Vikas’s upcoming film Super 30 also issued a statement that he cannot work with anyone who is guilty of such grave misconduct. He urged the producers to take a harsh stand on the matter.
