Saif Ali Khan, who is awaiting the release of his next film Baazaar is promoting it in full swing but is in no mood to do so out of his way. The actor is of the opinion that extensive promotions won’t make any film a hit.
Calling his last Kaalakaandi an experiment, he said, “It didn’t work but we tried to do something different. One has to be really smart to make a hit film or to make a film that has a universal appeal. I think it was a fun film. I don’t feel that Indian distribution is responsible for its failure; it might be not advertised a lot. I think these days, films aren’t advertised properly. Every actor says my film is amazing but people won’t believe it. Like in older days, songs used to play on television and people used to decide whether to watch the film or not. You can’t rely on the actor to sell the film. For Baazaar, I would do whatever my producers will ask me to do but within reasons, I am not going to go crazy to promote the film as it is waste of time. I won’t promote Baazaar on reality shows.”

Furthermore, speaking of the ecosystem of distribution of films, the actor added, “Films are in very exciting times since I have been offered some really good stuff. A few years ago, on a film set we used to talk about any good Hollywood film, now we are doing the same. Times have changed and so are audiences. Filmmakers and producers are trying new stuff; they are pushing the envelope in terms of scale and ideas. Ajay Devgn is doing Taanaji, we are doing Hunter. After Omkara, I have made sure to pick different roles. Looking different is still easier but sounding different is what makes you stand out of the league. I feel your voice advertises your heritage and it is good to have that."

Saif, in fact, also said that audiences in foreign countries love watching Indian films. "For that matter, Omkara was not really an experiment but the good part of the film was that all mainstream actors did such an artistic film back then. Kareena Kapoor, Ajay Devgn, Vivek Oberoi, Bipasha Basu were a great cast. I have never really thought of distribution of films but it is definitely growing a lot. A lot of people here in the industry don’t have a western mindset or approach. Surprisingly, our films are liked in China, even the Middle East to Morocco, our films are doing great," he added.
Baazaar is scheduled to release on October 26.
