Vinta Nanda files police complaint against Alok Nath; writes open letter to PM Modi

Television producer-director Vinta Nanda filed a complaint at a police station in Mumbai on Wednesday against veteran actor Alok Nath for allegedly sexually assaulting her around 20 years ago. While speaking to the press outside the police station, Nanda said that her statement will be recorded soon as assured by the officer on duty and that a First Information Report (FIR) will be recorded in the case subsequently.

“Today, I have given written complaint against Mr. Alok Nath at the police station. The officer on duty, Mr. Pasalwar has assured me that they will record my statement soon and FIR will be registered in this matter. I have full faith in the police and judiciary. After 19 years of trauma, I am here to lodge the complaint,” Nanda told reporters.

With the #MeToo movement gaining momentum in India since the last month, Nanda, in a chilling Facebook post last week, accused Alok Nath of sexually assaulting her when she was the producer of 90’s television show Tara, which cast the actor in the lead role.

Nath, also known as the ‘sanskaari’ actor on account of the virtuous roles that he plays in family dramas, had said that he "neither denies nor agrees" with Nanda's allegations and that "only what a woman says will be considered".

Meanwhile, Nanda also wrote an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting him to enable survivors to seek justice. “We're victims but are being victimised and humiliated because the men being questioned have the support of the practices and traditions of male dominance for thousands of years. They say this is no country for women. Prove them otherwise by taking action Sir,” she said in her letter that has gone viral on social media.

Following Nanda’s accusation, Nath's wife Ashu Singh reportedly moved a court seeking a police probe into the allegation.
