For Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh, filming Thugs Of Hindostan was a herculean task, to say the least. In a new video that has been made available online by the makers of the film, the star cast and director Vijay Krishna Acharya along with fashion designers Rushi Sharma and Manoshi Nath explained what went behind creating the costumes of the actors.
“The look of the characters is very important in this film and the costume plays an integral role,” Vijay said, explaining the nuances as Rushi added, “To transport the audience into the 1800’s, we actually started living and breathing the 1800’s.”

Aamir, cast as Firangi, spoke about his costume and said, “So for Firangi, I think what we figured is, other than the dhoti that he wears, everything else, he has robbed from somewhere…the jacket is somebody's. Plus, he has a lot of other things hanging around with him. He has got a pouch with water in it. He has got a whole lot of things with him.”
Creating Big B’s Khudabaksh’s costumes were equally challenging as the designers said that they were directed to design his clothes for somebody, who is a warrior but is a farmer at heart.
“The costume designers have gone through a huge process of research and labour to design something,” Big B said in the video.

Manoshi explained that the kurta that Khudabaksh wears in the film is made of cotton with a mulmul lining while hard armour has been placed over it. “The leather used to soak in water because of the sequences shot in the rain and it almost became as heavy as wearing a metal outfit. It was cumbersome,” Big B added.
Zafira’s character, played by Fatima, was difficult as well while the actress said that she spent almost three hours before shoot every day to set her hair.
As far as Katrina’s Suraiyya is concerned, the answer is in the teaser of the song itself. “Suraiyya is an extremely layered character because you always see her as a siren but in the end, the reveal shows that there is a revolution inside her too,” Rushi said while Katrina added that she was impressed by the first draft of her costume.

“We wanted the character to be a bit raw and rustic,” Katrina said.
