Shah Rukh’s Baazigar was shot with two different endings, reveal directors Abbas-Mustan

Shah Rukh Khan starrer Baazigar made him a superstar upon its release. However, the film faced quite a few hurdles like delay in shoot due to communal riots and not getting a bankable star to essay the negative role. However, as the film completed 25 years today, the director Abbas-Mustan are having the last laugh as the film is regarded as one of the best Bollywood suspense thrillers of all times. The film was released on November 12, 1993, and featured Kajol and Shilpa Shetty in the lead along with SRK.

During a media interaction, the director Mustan in an interview revealed that they had shot two different climax scenes for the film. He revealed that veteran actor Rakhee who played Shah Rukh’s mother in the film wanted a different climax for the film which will have the hero not dying.

Mustan said, “Rakhee ji wanted the ending to be changed as she felt audience should not be let down. A lot of distributors said the hero should not die in the end and instead the police should come and arrest him. So we had shot both the endings. We felt the ending where the police comes and takes SRK will not work as the emotional graph of the character would not be conveyed correctly."

However, when the first copy came out both Rakhee and the distributors agreed to go with the vision of Abbas-Mustan. SRK who is now regarded as the ‘King of Romance’ actually made his name playing an anti-hero in Baazigar, Darr and Anjaam. He was also not the first choice for the role which was first offered to Anil Kapoor and Salman Khan. The directors also refuted the rumours of a sequel to the film but said that they might think about it if they come across a good story.
