B.P. Singh, the man behind TV show CID, appointed as new Chairman of FTII, succeeding Anupam Kher

Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) took to Twitter last evening to make the announcement of Brijendra Pal Singh’s appointment as the President of FTII Society and the Chairman of the governing council of the reputed institute. This came almost one month after Anupam Kher stepped down from the position, citing his work commitments. The actor had mentioned he had international assignments to complete as a reason for his resignation. It came as a shock to the institute as Kher was one of the first to form the body.

An FTII release read, “The tenure of Singh, who succeeds Anupam Kher, will be for the remaining period of block of three years starting from March 3, 2017 as per the provisions of FTII rules.” B.P. Singh was the man behind the longest running Indian series CID. The series recently completed 21 long years of uninterrupted run on Sony.

B.P. Singh has earlier held the position of Vice-Chairman of FTII and is also an alumnus of the institute. Interestingly, actor Gulshan Grover was also being considered for the position. He, however, turned down the position citing work commitments. An autonomous body, FTII also has Kangana Ranaut, Satish Kaushik and Divya Dutta as a part of the council.

This explains why CID came to an abrupt end after such a successful stint on Indian television. The last episode of CID aired on October 2018.
